Visit Orlando & Disney for Memorial Weekend

If you want to kickstart your summer season with something special, then a visit to Orlando over Memorial Weekend is just the ticket. What better place to celebrate the start of summer than the happiest place on Earth? Here’s everything you need to know about spending Memorial Weekend in Orlando.

Weather & Crowds

Disney World over Memorial Day weekend

Memorial Weekend in Orlando is typically warm and humid, with temperatures in the mid-80s to low 90s Fahrenheit, making it perfect for outdoor adventures and water park escapades. Be sure to pack sunscreen and stay hydrated during this time of year. There can also be occasional afternoon showers, so packing a light rain jacket is a good idea.

Given the holiday weekend and the start of summer vacation for many, you can expect crowds in Orlando to be a bit heavier compared to other times of the year. But with that said, many schools are still in session through the end of May, so crowds are not typically as bad as they be during the height of summer. Disney World and the surrounding theme parks tend to be busy all weekend, with peak crowds on Memorial Day, however many Disney enthusiasts consider May to be one of the best months to visit. The weather is the kind of warmth you expect from a Florida vacation, the crowds are not at peak summer capacity yet, and there are typically fewer Disney refurbishments in may. With some planning, you can definitely make the most of your Disney experience over Memorial Weekend!

Things to Do

Typhoon Lagoon water park at Disney

While Disney doesn’t typically host any Memorial Day specific events over the holiday weekend, there are plenty of fun activities and attractions to enjoy during your stay.

Visit a Water Park. Cool off from the Florida heat at one of Orlando’s water parks. Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon offers exhilarating water slides, a lazy river adventure, and a massive wave pool. Universal’s Volcano Bay is made up of themed “village” sections with some of the fastest water slides in the area. The top-rated Aquatica Orlando is known for its variety of thrilling slides and sandy beach areas. Most of Orlando’s water parks have dedicated play areas appropriate for younger children, making them an easy choice for family fun. You really can’t go wrong visiting any of these water parks over Memorial Weekend!

Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival. This annual event runs the entire month of May and June, ending in early July. The Flower & Garden Festival features excellent food booths, gardening entertainment, and a truly beautiful landscape as Epcot comes alive with flowers everywhere. Even if you’re not a gardening or flower enthusiast, this festival is well worth a visit!

Visit a Theme Park. Orlando’s title as the Theme Park Capital of the World is well-earned and a visit to one of the parks is a must while you’re here. Explore the movie magic at Universal Orlando, have up-close encounters with marine life at SeaWorld or build some memories at LEGOLAND.

Of course, a visit to Disney World is an unforgettable experience. From the fantastical Magic Kingdom to unique worldly adventures at Epcot to behind-the-scenes magic at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, there are so many areas to explore. Disney World typically commemorates Memorial Day with special tributes and patriotic displays throughout the parks, honoring the brave men and women who have served their country.

Have an Animal Encounter. The unique Discovery Cove allows you to spend the day relaxing in natural water features, swimming with dolphins or snorkeling with manta rays. There are also educational freshwater and saltwater animal encounters throughout the park. Disney World’s Animal Kingdom takes you on a journey through the continents of the world, where you can encounter exotic wildlife, embark on epic expeditions, and witness the otherworldly beauty of “Pandora – The World of Avatar”.

Take a Day Trip. If you want to take a break from the crowds at the parks, consider a day trip to see the sights close to Orlando. The end of May is a perfect time to explore one of the natural springs close to Orlando, where you can swim and paddle through crystal clear waters and maybe even see a manatee. The Kennedy Space Center is an hour away from Orlando and provides an excellent way to spend an afternoon for science fans. And of course, some of the best beaches in Florida are found within 2 hours to the east or west from Orlando.

Adrenaline-Pumping Fun. For some exhilarating thrills, head to one of Orlando’s aerial attractions. At Gatorland, you can climb walls and zipline through alligator enclosures or take a monster truck safari through the swamp. For heart-pounding excitement, the tree top obstacle course at Orlando Tree Trek offers ropes courses and ziplines for all levels.

Visit International Drive. This bustling 11-mile strip is known for an abundance of entertainment, attractions, dining and shopping. See Orlando from 400 feet up on The Wheel, attend a live show or music performance, hit the shops, or spend some time at one of the classic amusement park attractions. Whatever fun you’re looking for, you’ll find it on International Drive.
