I made sure that I arrived at the park 45 minutes prior to opening so that I was nearly first in line - I am glad I did. When the opening show concluded just in front of the Tree of Life and the rope dropped there was easily 3000 people behind me. Disney® veterans know that the key to riding any new ride is getting to the park early, getting a Fast Pass (for the second ride), and getting right in the line before a queue develops. This is just what I did.
If you do make the opening rush to Everest DO NOT take a short-cut through Dino-Land as a few hundred people did who were previously at the front of the line. Everest cues up on the Asian side of the ride and those who tried to cut the corner found themselves behind a few hundred people. I was on the 5th or 6th coaster out of the station. When the ride was over the standby wait was 40 minutes - 12 minutes after the park opened!
THE RIDE:
Everest won't rank as your favorite coaster but does deliver some high speed drops and turns and one extended backwards motion - this seems to be the 'in thing' these days - aka 'The Mummy' at Universal Studios®. I was a little disappointed at the lack of a real story during the ride. Disney® spent a lot of time on the queue entertainment instead to set-up the plot. I was expecting a cross between Splash Mountain and The Mummy. There is one animatronic Yeti towards the end that is very realistic but I would have liked to see more of that throughout the ride. Overall, this is a very good ride for those who don't want to do loops or get sick on such rides. For a coaster, it's mild while still being fun.
THE KIDS
There are periods of darkness and a few scary moments for children under 10. Sound effects and simulated shadows make up most of the experience. There were two 7-9 year old children seated in front of me and they seemed to really enjoy themselves though.
SUGGESTIONS:
- Get to the ride EARLY (opening is best, of course) and grab a fast pass on your way in to ride again a short-time later. Do not take the short-cut through Dino-Land unless your a sprinter. You might find yourself at the end of a VERY long queue.
- Each seat has a storage bag for your belongings so locker rentals are not required. Overall, the ride is mild with a few sharp turns and two drops.
- If your children are easily scared by total darkness and scary sound effects then caution should be used - unless you wish to scare the wits out of them. Totally up to you, of course.
- Finally, relax - you're on vacation!
